Abstract

A planar monopole UWB antenna for microwave medical imaging systems is presented, and its operating frequency range from 3.09 GHz to 10.65 GHz. The overall size of the design is 30×20×1.6 mm3. Two phantom models were developed to represent the arm and breast models to evaluate the design performance in terms of reflection coefficient, SAR, directivity and efficiency. The results showed that even with the phantom models, UWB bandwidth is still maintained. The directivity and efficiency of the design with and without the phantom models were studied, and its good performance was proved. The specific absorption rate (SAR) was also investigated, and it showed a value far below the safety limit. Therefore, the planar monopole UWB antenna is very suitable for microwave medical imaging systems.
